Both Craig & I spent time in the UK separately before we met and married. I did the working holiday rite of passage (as many Aussies do!) back in 1994. I travelled solo and met some of the most amazing friends along the way. Many that I still keep in contact with now. In fact I will be attending a wedding in NZ of a friends I met in London whilst working in a pub. Craig missed the age range by a whisker for the working holiday option so went over to the UK in 1997 and stayed for 3 months (or until his money ran out which was quick in those days).
Craig & I honeymooned in Vietnam, Thailand & Singapore 10 years ago and were in the process of planning our next trip to South America when I fell pregnant with Alannah. That was the end of our travel adventures for a while.
We have done a lot of camping around Australia in the last couple of years, I’ve posted a few blogs on some of these trips. From Eden, to go whale watching, to our Christmas get away, a camping trip to QLD to visit the theme parks. Not to mention a Melbourne Cup weekend trip all complete with a hospital visit for Caelan resulting in 7 stitches in his chin! I wont forget that trip in a hurry. That was the second camping trip that has resulted in a hospital visit, things don’t always go to plan when you have 3 kids.
We took the kids to New Zealand in 2012 & had an amazing time. We stayed with and visited friends I met when travelling in 1994. We did a road trip from Christchurch to Wanaka, fitting in a day trip to Queenstown and Milford Sound. Both Craig & I had been there separately, Craig on a ski trip before meeting me & I took our 2nd child, Keira over in 2009. We packed a lot into the trip and my biggest learning curve from that trip was to take spare clothes on the plane. We had a messy accident after checking our luggage in.
I went to Hong Kong last year on a girls trip with my mum & sister. I loved Hong Kong so much that I want to take the family back and now that our kids are a bit older it’s time to start some new adventures. So in October 2014 we headed to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Borneo. I was especially excited about taking the kids to Hong Kong Disneyland. Of course a snappy visit to Macau as well. A stop over in Kuala Lumpur were we took in all the sights and then on to Borneo and a visit to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre to see the orang-utans. While in Borneo I celebrated a big birthday (no further details on that!).
This year is shaping up to be just as fun. We took the kids for their first snorkelling holiday at Airlie Beach for the March long weekend and I was so proud of how they had a red hot go at it and achieved. We have purchased a camper trailer so expect lots of weekend camping trips. The kids and I are heading to Tassie in July as Craig doesn’t have enough leave to join us so I’m going it alone for the first time. The kids are excited about going over on the Spirit of Tasmania. We also snagged a great deal and will be heading back to Vietnam in September for the first time in 11 years and this time with the kids. I’m pretty excited about 2015 so hope you drop back in and see how it all goes.
So come with us on our journey to travel more and show our kids how amazing travelling is. In the meantime I will share with you any tips and tricks I discover while trying to find the best deals for our family of 5. Would love to hear your travel stories also and happy to answer any of your questions.
