Langkawi’s Top Tourist Attraction – SkyCab

The Skycab has been rated Langkawi’s top tourist attraction on the island and I can see why, the views from the viewing platform are amazing and certainly worth the 30 minute ride in the SkyCab to the top. The Skycab isn’t just about the ride though, there’s plenty to do up there and you could easily spend a whole day wandering. There are so many amazing things to do in Langkawi with kids.

SkyCab – Langkawi’s Top Tourist Attraction

You ride to the top of Machincang Mountain while enjoying the beautiful sights of the Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park below. There are VIP and glass bottom gondolas that provide a 360 degree view back down to the beach. If you’re lucky you’ll see one of the planes coming in to land at Langkawi Airport. You also have a fantastic view of Paradise Island 101 which is a private island full of fun activities that kids of all ages will love. Just a tip, if its going to be really hot I suggest you head up to the SkyCab in the morning as the gondolas are not air conditioned and they do get very warm.

We were picked up at 9am and taken to Langkawi Skycab, where we were met by our guides from Naturally Langkawi. We were staying at Cenang Beach which is about a 20 minute drive from the SkyCab and it can be seen from many parts of the island.  Now you would be forgiven if you thought that the SkyCab was the only thing out there but I was very surprised to find that it’s quite the entertainment hub!

Once you spend a bit of time taking in the amazing views over Langkawi, 708m above sea level, you can wander around and visit the souvenir shop and have a drink at the cafe. There’s a padlock fence up there so we purchased one in the shape of a heart for the kids to write their names on. Once you’ve written on it, the person selling them engraves over your writing. It’s all included in the one price that was about $10AUD for lock and engraving. The kids were pretty excited and its a nice way to leave something behind.

SkyBridge

After that head round to the Sky Bridge, a stunning feat of technology, the bridge measures at 125m in length and is suspended by a single pylon and sits 100m above the ground. There is a stairway and path to the Sky Bridge but if you want to get there in style take the Sky Glide which we aptly named the Great Glass Elevator. It’s like a glass elevator on tracks that takes you from the Top Station down to the Sky Bridge and back up again.

We arrived about 10.30 and the weather had been a bit dodgy, we were experiencing rain in the mornings. On this morning though, the rain had cleared but it was still a bit cloudy which added to the allure of the place. We were unable to see the ocean from the other side but the view across the SkyCab and down to Paradise Island 101 was spectacular. The other side that was all clouded in reminded me of Avatar with the cloud and the mountain. It really is a very beautiful area and the kids were excited to be standing above the clouds.

SkyRex

We didn’t have enough time to visit SkyRex but the 3D experience is a cross between a roller coaster and a 3D movie!  The experience requires you to be seated in a purpose built tram a screen in front and around the tram for a sensory and physical experience.

The ride goes for 5 minutes and you can expect movements, water sprays, burst of air, ground movement, shaking and dramatic lighting and sound, all to make you feel that you are actually in the ride. With 3D projectors and 4D effects, it sounds like a brain explosion. The kids might have got a bit scared though, I think!

Art in Paradise

Langkawi is home to the largest 3D museum in South East Asia and the kids had a ball here. I was snapping away like the paparazzi! It was one of those moments when the kids were constantly calling mum and I didn’t know where to look or who to answer first! We have recently had one of these open in Melbourne but we hadn’t been there so this was a first for us.

We had so much fun getting the kids to pose for the best effects in the shots and the photos are amazing to match, Craig and I even had fun jumping in some of the shots. Its amazing how real the photos look, its hard to tell when you are standing there as you don’t get that 3D effect until you look at the photo. As you can see the photos speak for themselves.

SkyDome

SkyDome looks like a huge planetarium, equipped with 12 3D projectors it offers a 360 degree view it immerses you into the experience making you think and feel like you are floating in outer space with the astronauts.  The short film goes for 10 minutes and seats 50 people.

This is an experience that’s perfect for adults and kids, both informative and with a wow factor. It will keep the kids happy while they learn something at the same time.

Cost

There are various package options available depending on what you want to do. Following I have provided pricing for the 4 main attractions listed above. These prices are accurate as at May 2017.

Verdict

The SkyCab is Langkawi’s top tourist attraction for a reason and I am very glad we visited. The views at the top were amazing and you could easily spend a whole day there if you visit all the attractions listed above. The kids really enjoyed the Art in Paradise and Craig and I really enjoyed the SkyCab and Sky Bridge. There’s something there for everyone.

There are plenty of other activities in the development, there’s loads of souvenir shops including plenty of food outlets. The surrounding gardens are really pretty and there’s plenty of places to sit down and rest between activities. As I wrote earlier, if its going to be hot I suggest you get there early due to the heat in the gondolas. There is a stop about 3 quarters of the way up where you can get off and take a breather. Don’t rule out a break if you only have an afternoon to visit.

While in Langkawi we stayed at the Meritus Pelangi Resort & Spa, click on the link to read our review. For ideas of things to do with kids in Langkawi check out our posts below.
