You’ll never run out of things to do in Singapore with kids, it’s an amazing city to visit and best of all it’s the cleanest and easiest to get around in South East Asia.  We have visited Singapore a number of times with the kids and I still haven’t experienced all the amazing things to do with them. I’m sure you’ll find many fun things to do in Singapore with  kids.

Singapore has really transformed since our first visit in 2003 on our honeymoon pre-kids. The waterfront area around Marina Bay is unrecognisable from our first visit. It’s now the most recognisable image of Singapore with the brilliant Marina Bay Sands Hotel and its distinctly shaped surf board sitting over its three towers. The infinity pool on the 57th floor is now among the best of all infinity pools the world over.

Regardless of how lovely Singapore is, it is still the most expensive of all South East Asian countries. It’s very compact, clean and has reliable public transport though and just all round easy and a pleasure to travel to. Changi Airport is efficient and rated as one off the best in the world. 1. Top things to do in Singapore with kids

Wondering where to go in Singapore or more importantly where to bring the kids in Singapore? There is an abundance of fun activities in Singapore and I have listed them for you below.

Due to the number of activities listed below, I’ve broken them down in to two areas, the main island of Singapore  and Sentosa Island. This will help you decide on where to stay, if you find most of the best places to visit in Singapore for you are on Sentosa Island, you might decide it’s best to stay there.

1.1 Singapore Zoo

One of the best things to do in Singapore is a visit to the Singapore Zoo, it’s touted as one of the top 10 zoos in the world. You notice on arrival the open plan style with maximum open space for the animals to roam. The Zoo has perfectly manicured gardens and is well planned out, the zoo is so large they provide a shuttle trolley to get you from each side, perfect for little ones who can get sore legs walking around all day.

There are many presentations and feeding times where you can learn a bit more about the animals and help feed them. We fed the giraffes while we were there. This is definitely one of the main places to visit in Singapore with kids.

 1.2 Breakfast with the Orangutans at Singapore Zoo

A must do in Singapore is breakfast at the Ah Meng Restaurant when visiting Singapore Zoo. The orangutans come down and join you for breakfast on their platform and its lovely watching them interact as a family. After you have filled your boots from the extensive breakfast buffet, you can have your photo taken with the orangutans on the platform behind you.

1.3 River Safari

The River Safari is a rivers of the world themed zoo, crossing each continent covering their biggest river systems. It’s the first of its kind in Asia, featuring freshwater exhibits and a river boat ride as its main highlights. Strangely the kids were very excited to see the manatees but the pandas and red pandas were the highlights. The kids enjoyed the Wild Amazonia ride and the Reservoir Cruise.

While it is expensive, you can even participate in the Panda Rise & Shine program. This gives you access to the back-of-house area of the Giant Panda Forest where you can help the keepers prepare breakfast for the bears and perform morning check-ups.

1.4 Night Safari

One of the best things to do in Singapore at night is a visit to the Night Safari, the world’s first nocturnal zoo. There are four trails covering different continents of the world for you to explore on a self guided style path or you can jump on the Night Safari tram and enjoy the audio commentary while you drive through each area.

The Creatures of the Night Show runs 4 times a night, this is one the kids will love, it covers the importance of conservation focusing heavily of the reduce, reuse, recycle message. Its interactive so don’t be surprised if you get called up on to the stage, kids love it.

1.5 Jurong Bird Park

Being a major #BirdNerd Jurong Bird Park is right up my alley! Jurong Bird Park is Asia’s largest bird park and home to 3500 birds and 400 species of which 20% are currently endangered. Famed for its large and immersive walk-in aviaries such as Lory Loft, Jungle Jewels and Waterfall Aviary. Newer and unique exhibits include Penguin Coast and Pelican Cove, the park sees 850,000 annual visitors.

There are conservation shows, Kings of the Skies and High Flyers Show, both shows run twice a day. Kings of the Skies showcase the fierce and the formidable birds of prey, majestic creatures at the top of their food chain.

1.6 Gardens by the Bay

One of the top places to go in Singapore is Gardens by the Bay.  It’s made up of three waterfront gardens, Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. All the gardens are connected and the whole site is situated on 101 hectares of reclaimed land. There are two conservatories as well, the Cloud Forest and the Flower Dome.  Adjacent to Gardens by the Bay is the Marina Bay Sands complex, the Singapore Flyer is also close by. The Super Tree Grove is what you see in a lot of the photos of Singapore these days.

There are a total of 18 Super Trees with 12 of them located in the Grove. Provided you aren’t visiting the two conservatories walking around the park and gardens is totally free. I recommend you visit at dusk, the light during the golden hour is fantastic. Once the sun sets head to Satay by the Bay, the hawker market located at the rear of the gardens for dinner then return for the free evening light show. Its definitely worth seeing, and just one of the many things to do in Singapore for free! That’s one of the great things about Singapore, there are many things to do in Singapore on a budget or that are even free.

1.7 Singapore Flyer

These giant ferris wheels are popping up in every big city these days and Singapore is no exception, it opened in 2008 and is as high as a 42 storey building. However, I have to admit the Singapore Flyer is in a pretty spectacular spot and will give you best best views of Gardens by the Bay with Marina Bay Sands behind.

This area was non-existent 15 years ago on our first visit to Singapore and has completely transformed the Singapore Waterfront.

1.8 Marina Bay Sands

You haven’t been to Singapore if you haven’t been to the Marina Bay Sands these days! We had the opportunity to stay there and while the rooms are modern and classy, nothing can beat the world’s most photographed infinity pool. Located on the 57th floor facing the city, hotel guests have access to the pool and watching a sunset from here is something you’ll never forget.

You can purchase passes to visit the Observation Deck however access to the infinity pool is only available to guests of the hotel. The best time to visit the Observation Deck is at dusk and queues will be long to purchase on the day. I recommend pre-booking tickets using the link below. I rate this as one of the most beautiful places in Singapore and in recent years has become one of the top sights in Singapore.

1.9 Singapore Hop On Hop Off Bus

I am a big fan of hop on hop off buses when visiting a new city, we have done it in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. You’ll be able to explore many of Singapore’s highlights, the classic ticket includes 5 different routes around Singapore, you can choose the route that best suits you.

There are over 60 stops to hop off and explore at your leisure and as many times as you wish, or simply stay on the bus and let it take you for a scenic spin. Buses servicing the 5 main routes arrive every 15 – 60 minutes (depending on the line and time of day). This option will ensure you see many of the main Singapore sightseeing places in a short period of time, perfect for people with a short layover in Singapore.

1.10 Singapore Botanic Gardens

One of the best places to visit in Singapore for free is the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The tropical gardens celebrated their 160th anniversary in 2019 and are located on the fringe of Singapore’s Orchard Road shopping district. The gardens are open from 5 am to midnight every day of the year, there’s no admission fee except for a small donation if you wish to visit the National Orchid Garden within the main gardens.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens was the first UNESCO Heritage Site in Singapore. I haven’t visited the gardens since 2003 and it will definitely be top of my list on my next visit. I loved the National Orchid Garden with over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids on display, the splendour of these gorgeous blooms is absolutely a sight to behold.

1.11 Singapore Chinatown

Chinatown’s maze of narrow roads includes Chinatown Food Street, with its restaurants serving traditional fare like Hainanese chicken rice, noodles and satay. Chinatown is a sharp contrast to the rest of the city, with low rise buildings and culture bursting out onto the streets. There are ornate Chinese, Buddhist and Hindu temples, museums galore and plenty of opportunities to soak up the bustling streets lined with old shophouses.

Don’t miss the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple a remarkable 4-storey temple, the main attraction is the solid gold 2-metre stupa on the 4th floor which is the place where the sacred relic is kept. Built in 1820, the Thian Hock Keng, or the Temple of Heavenly Happiness, is the oldest and most interesting Chinese temple in Singapore. Don’t miss the Chinatown Street Market with hundreds of stalls selling everything from silk robes to lucky cats, you’ll definitely find a bargain or two. If you love Chinese food, then Chinatown is the best place to go in Singapore.

1.12 Singapore Little India

Located east of the Singapore River, Little India is a buzzing neighbourhood, known for its traditional Indian restaurants, located along Serangoon Road and Race Course Road. Famous for its busy streets filled with shopping malls, jewellery stores and traditional tailor shops. The colour, smiles and smells are all authentically sub continental and warm, making this one of Singapore’s must-visit districts.

Sri Veeramakaliamman, a popular Hindu temple, dates back to the 19th century and is one of the prettiest and busiest temples in Little India. Entrance is free but dress respectfully and take your shoes off before stepping inside the temple. The House of Tan Teng Niah is a colourful 2-storey villa dating back to 1900, the local community is responsible for the rainbow of colours that it’s so famous for, as well as its renovation and upkeep.

1.13 Singapore River Bumboat Cruise

Enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Singapore River on an electric bumboat, the 40 min cruise takes you past some of Singapore’s most famous tourist attractions including Raffles Landing Site, The Merlion, The Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands and the colourful traditional shophouses of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Board at Clarke Quay and feel free to jump off at any jetty to continue exploring Singapore by foot. Once you get off though, you’ll be unable to get back on with the same single ticket.

1.14 National Museum of Singapore

Founded in 1887, Singapore’s oldest museum is home to over 1,700 historical and cultural artifacts. Despite the historical building, inside the museum sports the latest in cutting edge display techniques, redefining the traditional museum experience. The National Museum, one of the many interesting things to do in Singapore, hosts innovative activities and events all year round including the well-loved Night Festival, visually arresting art installations, as well as performances and film screenings of different styles and genres. I don’t tend to visit many museums when travelling so this is probably one of the more unique things to do in Singapore and perfect for the history buff!

1.15 Sultan Mosque

Also known as Masjid Mosque, it’s located in the historic Kampong Glam area and is the focal point for Singapore’s Muslim community. The mosque was built in 1824 for Sultan Hussein Shah, the first sultan of Singapore. Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, gave S$3,000 to the construction of a single-storey building with a double-tiered roof.  It was re-designed in 1932 to what it looks like now, a true reflection of the the multi-cultural environment and blended society that Singapore is today. Always dress respectfully when visiting Mosques, covered shoulders and knees and a head scarf will be appreciated.

1.16 Science Centre Singapore

A great family activity where you can learn about science and technology in an interactive way. Singapore is definitely forward thinking in regards to technology, the centre runs many school education programs and receives approx. 1 million visitors per year. The Science Centre is also home to Southeast Asia’s first 8K 3D Digital Dome. The Omni-Theatre is equipped with a powerful digital planetarium system which allows visitors to peer into space at 8K resolution and travel through time at light speed. Don’t forget the Butterflies Up-Close, Singapore’s only indoor butterfly enclosure. The Science Centre Singapore is located in Jurong East and has a lot to offer the inquisitive kid.

2. Top things to do on Sentosa Island with kids

Sentosa Island is pretty much a huge playground mostly focused for kids but plenty for adults too! Home to 14 resorts, 2 golf courses, one casino and 2 kms of sheltered beach front, Sentosa attracts 22 million visitors per year.  Sentosa Island has experienced rapid development over the last 10 years or so, it is now a premier place to stay with some really world class resorts.

I have it on good authority that Resorts World Sentosa will be undertaking a massive re-development including substantial expansion plans. I can confirm Universal Studios Singapore will soon include a Minion Park and Super Nintendo World. There will also be another 2 hotels added to the overall resort. 

2.1 Resorts World Sentosa

Spanning 49 hectares, Resorts World Sentosa is Asia’s premium lifestyle resort. Built in 2010 by Genting Singapore, at the time it was the third most expensive building ever constructed. The six hotels offer a total of 1,840 rooms and each hotel is designed with a different theme, catering to both the leisure and business visitors.

There are 8 fine dining restaurants including Osia by Scott Webster, a modern Australian restaurant featuring mostly steak and seafood and 1 casual dining restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel. I’m really keen to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel, looks like the perfect place for families to stay. Resorts World Sentosa is definitely one of many fun places to see in Singapore!

2.2 Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios is a hit with kids of all ages and one of the more popular activities to do in Singapore with kids. Located inside Resorts World Sentosa, its easy to get to via monorail. We purchased a 1 day Universal Studios Pass and found that enough time to explore as we were there from open to close and saw the whole park. We were however there on a week day when crowds are significantly lighter.

If you are considering visiting during peak times, I would consider purchasing an Universal Studios Express Pass to ensure you have the opportunity to ride all the big ticket rides in a 1 day period.

2.3 Kidzania

Kidzania is effectively an indoor theme park suited best to kids aged 4-12. It’s a mini world where the kids can experience what working would be like. The kids can try their hand at being flight crew, pilots, lab technicians, ice cream makers, DJs, radio announcers, couriers, nurses, retail workers, bank tellers just to name a few. 

It really is a great way for kids to experience what life will be like when they are employed in specific sectors but doing it in a fun and engaging way. Visitor numbers are capped daily to ensure maximum opportunity for all kids so if you have a tight itinerary I suggest you pre-book tickets. Also if weather is wet outside its one of the best indoor activities in Singapore.

2.4 Cable Car at Sentosa Island

One of Sentosa Islands oldest attractions is the cable car which opened on 15 February 1974. The gondola lift provides an aerial link from Mount Faber on the main island of Singapore to the resort island of Sentosa across Keppel Harbour. The cable car runs from 8.45am until 10.00pm every day of the week, however it will close if there are high winds.

There are two lines, the original Mount Faber line from Singapore to Sentosa and the Sentosa line which runs out to Siloso Point. They meet at Sentosa station on the Mount Faber line and Imbiah Lookout on the Sentosa line with a 3-5 min walk in between the two. You can even have a dining experience in a glass gondola and take in the views at night, click to book your Cable Car Sky Dining experience which lasts 3 hours and includes an amazing 4 course meal.

2.5 Adventure Cove Waterpark

Beat the stifling Singapore heat and head to the fun filled water park, Adventure Cove on Sentosa. The park has 7 thrilling water rides that will have you enjoying radical twists and dips before splashing out into the pool at the bottom.

If adventure packed is not your thing, like me, and you like things a bit more relaxed, head to the Adventure River were you will drift past 14 stunning habitats including a lush jungle garden, a mysterious grotto and an underwater tunnel with a sea of marine life swimming above and around you.

The amazing Rainbow Reef contains 20,000 friendly fishes on a man-made reef or Ray Bay were you can interact with a few dozen rays cruising over the top of your feet. Madame Tussaud’s Singapore is a wax museum and tourist attraction at the Imbiah Lookout of Sentosa Island. 2.12 AJ Hackett Sentosa Bungy Jump

For those that do have the fortitude, you can try your hand at bungy jumping at AJ Hackett Sentosa Bungy Jump. I have to admit, bungy is not my thing but it is Craig’s. Craig has bungy jumped in New Zealand at both the original AJ Hackett bungy jump and the Ledge off the side of Ben Lamond in Queenstown, at the Macau bungy jump which is the tallest in the world and in Bali. I have no doubt next time we are in Singapore Craig will be keen to give this a crack.

Feel like you’re flying as you soar 47 meters above Siloso Beach for the pure adventure and adrenaline rush.  Not that you’ll notice the beach while you are free falling towards the ground! You’ll be jumping from the purpose made platform 50m above the ground. Jumpers must weight between 40kgs-125kgs and parental consent is required for those under 18 years old.

2.16 Fort Siloso & Fort Siloso Skywalk

At 11-storeys high and 181 meters long the Skywalk trail provides a scenic trek among the treetops of Sentosa en route to Fort Siloso. The fort is now a military museum open to the public and a stark reminder of Singapore’s involvement in World War II. Both them museum and skywalk are free activities for everyone to enjoy.

Siloso is derived from the Malaysian word meaning ‘rock’. The building at the entrance of Fort Siloso is now known as the Surrender Chambers and has a vivid portrayal of the scenes of the British and Japanese surrenders in WWII with actual footage of the war being played interactively. Between 1942-1945, the fort was used as a small prisoner of war camp.

Home of the MegaZip, kids will love flying through the tree top canopy of Sentosa’s jungle and landing on the beautiful white sandy beach of  Siloso. We visited the 3D Art in Paradise in Langkawi a few years back and the Trick Eye Museum is the same sort of concept. We also have one here in Melbourne called ArtVo. I first saw the photos pop up on social media platforms a few years back and thought they would be lots of fun.

Enjoy an amazing outdoor night time production starring Sentosa’s amazing ocean views in an awe-inspiring display of water, laser and fire effects and set to majestic music. There are two shows per night, 7.40pm and 8.40pm and the they run for 20 mins.

2.23 Sentosa Merlion

The Merlion was been a Singapore super attraction ever since my first visit in 2003. The 37 metre-tall mythical creature, the legendary Merlion is a half lion, half fish, the guardian of prosperity for a deeply superitious island nation of Singapore. The lion depicts the folklore of Prince Sang Nila Utama’s rediscovery of lion (singa) and City (pura) while the fish tail symbolises ancient fishing village of Temasek, meaning “sea” in Javanese. Legend has it that the Merlion would visit Sentosa Island every year to guard Singapore’s well-being. Given its one of the richest nations in the world, it appears the Merlion has well and truly done its job.

Singapore not known for its wild surf, however if the kids are missing the big waves check out Wave House Sentosa. Located right on Siloso Beach the open air complex consists of a pool, wave rides, 2 bars, live music & a massive surf shop. Combine your surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding skills to master the 10m FlowBarrel which consists of smooth barreling waves.

2.25 Sentosa Express Train

The Sentosa Express will get you from one side of Sentosa to the other in 8 minutes! Ride express to Sentosa’s famous attractions such as Resorts World Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore and S.E.A Aquarium at the Waterfront Station, 4D Adventureland and Butterfly Park at the Imbiah Station, Siloso and Palwan beaches  at the Beach Station and more.

This is the quickest way to get between the attractions on Sentosa Island. Ticket includes unlimited rides on the Sentosa Express for the specified date. Price includes island admission fee.

3. Located just over the border in Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Johor Bahru is just over the border in Malaysia, its an easy trip across and there are a few different options for getting there. I wrote a post about the different options for getting to Legoland from Singapore. The border crossing is generally pretty straight forward however at times it can be time consuming if the border is busy. Sunday nights are generally a bad time to be planning a return trip to Singapore.

3.1 Legoland Malaysia

Do you have a Lego Master in your house? Our kids love Lego and its the perfect attraction for kids of all ages as well as big kids (looking at you hubby). We visited Legoland on a day trip from Singapore, transportation was easily organised to Legoland Malaysia and the border crossing was painless for us. Coming back in to Singapore is a little more time consuming so keep that in mind when deciding on your times.

If you decide to stay at Johor Bahru for the night there is plenty to do. The Legoland Malaysia Resort has a Lego themed hotel which the kids will love. I suggest you spend a whole day at the Legoland Theme Park and then the next day at the Legoland Water Park. The weather is warm and humid year round ensuring perfect weather for utilising the Water Park. Tickets can be purchased separately or as a combo for 1 or 2 days. 3.2 Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town

Now this is one focused at toddlers, it includes shows on the ‘Purrfect Stage’ with all their friends such as Hello Kitty, Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina, Barney and Pingu. Check out Hello Kitty House and the Wishful Studio where you can dress up as your favourite characters and take home loads of photos.

If that’s not enough you can hit the merchandise store on the way out, we all know we don’t get out of those without at least one purchase for the cherubs to remember the trip by! See my transportation options from Singapore above under Legoland Malaysia section.

Best places to visit in Singapore in 3 days

If you only have 3 days, you’ll still be able to experience many fun activities in Singapore. Depending on the age of your kids there are many combinations you could do depending on the age of your kids. I think you’d be best doing a day of activities on Sentosa then another day back on the Singapore mainland. I’m a big supporter of tourist buses when you only have a short stay. Here’s my recommendation below:

Day 1 – I would recommend spending a day on Sentosa and visit Universal Studios Singapore and depending on how quickly you get around the park maybe squeeze in a Sentosa Skyline Luge and have a walk around in the evening to the other free activities outline above. If you have young kids you could replace Universal Studios Singapore with Kidzania.

Day 2 – I would do the Singapore hop on, hop off bus as you are able to visit many of the main attractions in Singapore quickly. The tour will definitely tick off the top tourist attractions in Singapore. Then visit Gardens by the Bay at dusk so you can experience the golden hour where you’ll get some amazing photos and then stay for the light show at 7.30pm.

Day 3 – I would recommend the Singapore Zoo and have an early start by booking the breakfast with the orangutans, the kids will love it and the park is pretty impressive rates in the top 5 things to see in Singapore.You could easily spend all day at the Singapore Zoo and then visit the Singapore Night Safari or if the kids are young visit the Jurong Bird Park and then back at the hotel for dinner and bed.

What to do in Singapore in 2 days you ask? I would cut out the Singapore hop on, hop off bus and spend a day doing age appropriate activities on the mainland and the other on Sentosa Island.

Singapore visa requirements

Travellers from Australia, USA, Canada and the UK aren’t required to purchase an Entry Visa but for for immigration clearance at Singapore, you may have to show:

• a passport with at least six months validity

• evidence of sufficient funds for your intended stay

• a confirmed onward or return flight ticket

•  a valid visa to enter your next destination, if applicable.

While there is a possibility you may be asked for these, I have never experienced it and have generally found immigration quick and efficient. Your passport must be valid for at least six months, even if you’re transiting. I get all my visa information from the Australian Government website Smart Traveller, the site also includes official advice from the Australian Government on safety precautions while travelling.

Best family hotels in Singapore

There are so many different hotels in Singapore that there will be a hotel to suit every budget. First you need to decide which area you want to stay, Marina Bay, Clarke Quay, Orchard Rd, Sentosa Island or in some of the other neighbouring districts of Singapore.

If you are on a budget this will certainly determine where you’ll stay in Singapore, the more expensive hotels are mostly around Marina Bay, Clarke Quay and Sentosa Island.

• Budget – Ibis Styles Singapore on Macpherson – located 5kms from downtown Singapore and close to the Tai Seng MRT is this budget family friendly hotel. There are a variety of room choices and 2 kids under 12 are able to stay free of charge;
• Mid range – Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre – located close to the MRT are just off the shopping mecca of Orchard Rd this hotel is a great mid range hotel for families. The rooms here also are able to accommodate 5 people which is fantastic for families with 3 kids like us;
• Luxury – Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa – definitely a great family focused hotel, located on Sentosa Island you’ll definitely love the kids club and this is the only hotel in Singapore that has beach frontage.

Where to eat in Singapore

Singapore is an exciting place to eat particularly given its fusion of Malaysian, Chinese and Indian cuisines. You can choose to pay top dollar at one of the many top end restaurants located in Singapore and there’s an abundance of them scattered around the Marina Bay and Clarke Quay area.

I prefer to find budget friendly places to eat in Singapore as I find the most authentic food in the hawker markets. There is a great one below the Marina Bay Sands shopping complex and another one, Satay by the Bay located in Gardens by the Bay.  There you can easily feed a family of 5 for under $20. My kids ate their body weight in satay sticks last time we visited Satay by the Bay.

You’ll also find great food at affordable prices in Chinatown and Little India. The food is traditional and more like a street food market, the areas are a tourist attraction in themselves. Definitely worth a visit and no doubt you’ll decide to eat once you smell the delicious food. Check out the Maxwell Food Centre, a popular hawker market in Chinatown and the Tekka Centre, a popular hawker market in Little India.

Getting to and from Singapore

Singapore is easily accessible via the world renowned Changi International Airport, reportedly one of the best airports in the world. Changi Airport serves more than 100 airlines flying to 400 cities in around 100 countries and territories worldwide. Each week, about 7,400 flights land or depart from Changi, or about one every 80 seconds. There are so many things to do in Singapore Airport, you definitely won’t be bored!

Its definitely my favourite airport for long layovers with plenty to see and do. The airport offers free Singapore City Tours for layovers longer then 5.5hrs, another of the many free attractions in Singapore. Check out the airport Nature Trail which includes an Orchid Garden and Koi Pond. There is also the Sunflower Garden in Terminal 2 and Cactus Garden in Terminal 1.

The newly opened Jewel Changi Airport which opened in April 2019 includes gardens and attractions, a hotel, aviation facilities and 300 retail and dining facilities. Attractions include the hugely popular HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s largest indoor waterfall at 40m tall. The Forest Valley, an indoor garden spanning five storeys and Canopy Park right on top of the structure.  The HSBC Rain Vortex lights up at night with a spectacular light and sound show which runs every hour.

Getting around Singapore

Getting around Singapore is very easy, due to the high cost of purchasing private vehicles on the island nation most people rely on taxis or public transport. The Singapore Government was concerned about the amount of cars and are doing their best to keep all forms of transport at an affordable price for everyone to use.

Grab, an app generated ride hailing service similar to Uber, originated in Singapore. I love Grab because it saves haggling with cab drivers over fares it can connect to your credit card but you can also pay cash.  The app will pin point your location and you put in your destination, once a driver picks up the fare, you’ll be able to see how far away the vehicle is and what type of vehicle it is. The price is set through the app and the fare will be displayed once you add your destination.

The three main modes of public transport in Singapore are the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), buses and taxis. Buses are, by far, the most common form of public transportation in Singapore, followed by the MRT and taxis respectively. The public transport system is second to none, its very punctual, clean and modern. The ez-link card is used to pay the exact fare for every journey made. The Singapore Tourist Pass comes with a fixed cost per day (S$10 for 1-Day Pass, S$16 for 2-Day Pass and S$20 for 3-Day Pass).

What to pack when visiting Singapore

Singapore has a tropical climate and due to its proximity to the equator, the weather is pretty much the same all year round, hot and humid.  The population of Singapore is a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian. So while not technically a Muslim nation you still must dress respectfully especially when visiting any Islamic structures such as Masjid Sultan.

I love the humid heat in Asia however I always take a light cardigan for when you are inside. Air conditioning is common when indoors and will often be quite cool. When outside light clothes such as shorts, skirts, dresses and t-shirts will be fine. Remember anything goes in Singapore but dress respectfully and modestly.

Budget for visiting Singapore

Singapore is the most expensive city in South East Asia so you’ll have to budget for that accordingly. I have always found Singapore accommodation to be very expensive but getting around and eating in Singapore can be done on a fairly tight budget. If you are visiting Singapore on a budget, I suggest you look at accommodation away from Sentosa and Marina Bay as these are the more expensive areas for accommodation.

Gardens by the Bay is free to wander around as with walking around Chinatown and Little India, you’ll find very affordable food options in these areas at the hawker markets. I always suggest to space out your main attractions/activities with down days were you explore by foot or public transport.

Regardless of the cost I will still highly recommend a Singapore family holiday, there’s so many great things to visit in Singapore that will match every budget. You don’t have to do it all, choose the activities that fit with your budget.

Verdict

Singapore is one of my favourite cities in South East Asia, its a breath of fresh air when returning from other less developed South East Asian countries. Its so clean and orderly and just a pleasure to visit. The kids love it too, however it is definitely more expensive so any visits to Singapore are only for a few days either on the way or way back from our main destination.

I love the weather in Singapore and that most people speak English so that makes it much easier. Singapore has transformed itself over the last 10 years to be a very family friendly option for families looking for somewhere fun to take their kids. Sentosa Island is like a huge kids playground and your kids will love every bit of it.
